Pylera capsules are a prescription combination medication used in adults to treat stomach and duodenal ulcers caused by the Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) bacterium. Each capsule contains three active ingredients: bismuth subcitrate potassium, metronidazole, and tetracycline hydrochloride.

Usage: Pylera is specifically indicated for the eradication of H. pylori infection to prevent the recurrence of ulcers. It is part of a combination therapy and must be taken with omeprazole (a proton pump inhibitor).
Dosage: A full course of treatment typically lasts 10 days. The usual adult dose is three Pylera capsules taken four times a day (after breakfast, after lunch, after the evening meal, and at bedtime).
Administration: Capsules should be swallowed whole with a full glass of water (8 ounces) to reduce the risk of esophageal irritation. It is important to complete the full 10-day course as prescribed, even if symptoms improve sooner.
Important Precautions and Warnings
Alcohol: Do not consume alcohol or products containing propylene glycol while taking Pylera and for at least three days after stopping the medication, as it can cause unpleasant side effects like nausea, vomiting, and headaches (a disulfiram-like reaction).
Dairy/Supplements: Avoid taking Pylera at the same time as milk, dairy products, or multivitamins/antacids containing aluminum, calcium, iron, magnesium, or zinc, as they can interfere with the body's absorption of the medication. Separate these products by at least a few hours.
Pregnancy/Breastfeeding: Pylera is generally contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as the tetracycline component can cause permanent tooth discoloration and affect bone development in an unborn baby or infant.
Common Side Effects: Harmless and temporary side effects may include darkening of the tongue and/or black stools. Other common side effects are nausea, diarrhea, and headache.
Severe Reactions: Contact a doctor immediately if you experience signs of an allergic reaction, severe stomach pain, bloody diarrhea, vision problems, or numbness/tingling in the arms/legs.
Sunlight Sensitivity: The medication can make you more sensitive to the sun; wear protective clothing and use sunscreen
